Geography for Non-Geographers: Using Open Mapping to Teach Geography

Aimed at teachers who want to improve their understanding of basic geographic concepts, this course is designed to boost your ability to work meaningfully with maps and cartography.

About This Course

How do maps work? What makes a good map? What does map scale mean? These questions and others are answered in this 3-unit course aimed at teachers who want a better grounding in basic geography. It is designed to boost the teacher's ability to work meaningfully with maps, understand cartographic concepts, and most importantly, teach these subjects effectively.

The course series, 'Geography for Non-Geographers' is designed for geography teachers who want to expand their knowledge of geographic concepts and develop a thorough grounding in cartographic literacy.

These courses are developed by TeachOSM, a project of OpenStreetMap US with support from our friends at the American Geographical Society.
